Welcome to the inaugural issue of UCLAx Magazine.

You’re reading this at a thrilling time for UCLA Extension. While we continue to develop courses and certificate programs to provide our students world-class learning experiences, we’re also expanding our reach across Los Angeles. As an anchor tenant of UCLA Downtown, the university’s new academic hub in the historic Trust Building, we will soon strengthen our engagement with Angelenos beyond Westwood and further position UCLA Extension as a leader in the continuing higher education landscape.

It’s only fitting, then, that our first issue focuses on community. In the following pages you’ll get an inside look at the role UCLA Extension plays in empowering communities in Los Angeles and beyond. You’ll read about the success of our Spanish-language early childhood education program; find a profile of Soleil Delgadillo, a UCLA Extension alum who has dedicated herself to helping her community thrive; and get an introduction to our new director of alumni relations, Nisha Chauhan-McGrath.

Our feature story highlights the work of UCLA Extension and the broader UCLA community in helping veterans enter and complete professional training programs, so they can secure long-term and sustainable employment. These efforts wouldn’t be possible without our partnerships with the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and UCLA’s Veterans Initiatives and Partnerships team, who work tirelessly across the city to make veterans’ lives better.

I’m so proud of the work we’re doing, and these stories illustrate the genuine impact our dedicated instructors, staff and students make in our communities. I’m excited to share them with you.
