LOS ANGELES, Calif.—This year’s virtual Tax Controversy Institute on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, presented by UCLA Extension, will offer insights from IRS leadership about priorities and initiatives and guidance and the best practices by top practitioners. The Tax Controversy Institute is known for covering the most current legal issues and sensitive tax practice problems confronting tax practitioners. This year’s keynote speaker is Charles P. Rettig, 49th Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service.

According to Steven Toscher, Institute Chair, and Managing Principal, Hochman Salkin Toscher Perez, P.C, “The Institute carries on its long tradition of top practitioners and leading Government representatives meeting and discussing current issues of importance in a collegial setting to advance the common interests of fair tax enforcement and administration.”

A conversation with James Lee, Chief, IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) Division, opens the conference. As Chief, Lee leads the IRS’s criminal enforcement efforts to investigate tax code violations and other related financial crimes such as money laundering, public corruption, cybercrimes, identity theft, narcotics, and terrorist-financing.

Moderated panels address employment tax enforcement, high income non-filers, high wealth examinations tax practice issues due to COVID-19, cannabis tax examinations, the new Office of Fraud Enforcement and criminal investigations.

Larry Campagna is this year’s recipient of the Bruce I. Hochman Award, presented to individuals who demonstrate outstanding proficiency in the field of tax law and best exemplify the principles personified by Mr. Hochman, a leading tax attorney for over 40 years, specializing in civil and criminal tax litigation. Campagna was named a “Texas Tax Legend” by the State Bar of Texas in 2019.
